Painting Melamine Wardrobe Doors

Painting melamine wardrobe doors. Cabinet coat is designed to adhere to plastic metal and urethane surfaces without a primer but laminate and melamine surfaces should be sanded before painting. Use tsp to clean the surface and use 150 grit sandpaper to rough it up. Wont leave brush marks. Yes in order for the melamine to properly adhere the surface needs to be cleaned sanded and primed with a primer thats designed for melamine or for laminate wood. Suitable for bare and previously painted wood and melamine surfaces.

Touch dry in only two hours. Sand the surfaces with fine grit sandpaper. Wont scuff or scratch can stand up to everyday life. If you dont prime the surface the melamine can chip off once it dries and hardens.

The purpose is not to remove the melamine coating but to roughen the smooth surface to give the paint something to adhere to. All tradespeople seemed convinced that zinsser b i n was the ultimate primer for melamine to make an eggshell paint adhere to the surface with no chipping so along with some earthborn paint in eggshell i set about painting my melamine wardrobes in the same colour as the walls. Consequently it was quite thick and bonded really well to the wood. You can make your own chalk paint using very fine plaster of paris paint and water.

Need to paint the rendered wall of the built in wardrobe and the little ceiling part inside it too. Then apply your primer. You can use other brands for this step but i would suggest sticking with oil based ones like zinsser or rustoleum spray paint. So much work involved.

Touch dry in 2 hours. The wilko brand primer i used is actually targeted for melamine and laminate type wood. Wipe down the surface of your wardrobe to remove any dust caused by the sandpaper. Hard to reach and painting between shelves.

Apply a light coat of enamel paint to the wardrobe using a paintbrush or roller. Brand new cupboards with one coat of paint. A third option is to apply a 100 percent acrylic flash bond primer such as xim rust oleum bullseye 1 2 3 zinnser or fresh start benjamin moore followed by two coats of satin or semi gloss enamel paint and two coats of clear acrylic sealer. A second or even third coat of paint may be necessary depending on how well your paint is covering.

Do i need a sealer binder. No need for a primer.
